JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Small businesses are closing stores at Westwood Mall, and Rite Aid is closing a location in Jackson. These are among the many businesses in Jackson County.

Crispy Walnut Breaded Chicken is a seasonal dish at One North.
A Northern Kitchen & Bar is always looking to change its menu to offer unique seasonal dishes.
One North typically comes out with an updated menu every quarter, with some items removed and others added for the season. The restaurant’s new fall menu debuted Monday, Oct. 2 and features a variety of seasonal salads, entrees and cocktails.
Returning to this year’s fall menu is the fall salad, a popular item from last year’s menu. It’s a spinach salad topped with roasted butternut squash, feta cheese, blackberries and a homemade balsamic vinaigrette. Protein can be added, and blackened shrimp is typically a popular choice, said general manager Craig Foreman.

Rite Aid is closing one of its Jackson locations after filing for bankruptcy.
Pharmacy chain Rite Aid is closing hundreds of stores in the U.S. in a bankruptcy restructuring, and the Jackson location is one of those being cut.
The Rite Aid location at 3100 E. Michigan Ave is one of 19 Michigan stores announced to close. The Jackson store’s last day is Monday, Nov. 6, Rite Aid officials wrote in an email.

Customers’ prescriptions will be transferred to other pharmacies to avoid disruptions, and employees will be moved to other Rite Aid stores if possible, officials said.

Delicious sandwiches, fresh donuts are a hit at Albion Foundry.
Like a foundry, the folks at this Albion bakehouse take pride in creating great things with their hands.
The Foundry Bakehouse and Deli opened in 2019 by Bill and Karen Dobbins, owners of Castor Concepts, as part of the revitalization of downtown Albion. Their daughter, Emily Verbeek, takes over in 2021.
Everything is made fresh daily at the bakery and deli, including the breads, pastries and donuts. Sandwiches and salads are also made to order.
All sandwiches and salads are named after the equipment or processes found in the factories. One popular sandwich is the ShakeOut, an Italian sandwich topped with ham, salami, tomato, lettuce, banana peppers, and mozzarella and provolone cheese.

Local businesses are seeing the benefits of filling vacant stores in Westwood Mall.
In the 1970s and 80s, Jackson’s Westwood Mall was the go-to place for big box stores and popular chain brands.
In the year Opened in 1972, the mall at 1850 W. Michigan Ave is filled with stores that carry popular brands. However, today, about half of the nearly 50-space facility sits empty because stores have closed or moved over the years.

This has created an opportunity for businesses in the Jackson area to fill some of the vacancies.
Over the past few years, about 17 local businesses have taken advantage of the mall’s empty pants, and Westwood Mall General Manager Ihrika Ray believes this will help the mall continue to be an important part of the community.

A popular boutique restaurant is hoping to expand while keeping some of the elements that made it a party store.
Flavorz from Home Town Convenience, 1033 Cooper St. It’s been operating since 2022, but owner Rae Klaven is always looking for ways to grow the business, including with a new food truck in September. So when the store’s owner, Robert Cass, decided it was time to retire, Clavo jumped at the chance to take over, she said.

“It was the right move for us,” Clavon said. “We knew it was going to be an obvious transition, but it’s really fun.”
Klaven took over Hometown Comfort on Thursday, Oct. 12, with the intention of turning the party store into a restaurant, Flavorz, while keeping some touches. They said that the construction has started but it will be done in stages.
